SuStrucSy Research Group

Sustainable Structural Systems (SuStrucSy) at the Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering of the University of Toronto explores new ways of conceiving, engineering, and delivering mass timber structures. We seek structural systems that are materially lean, architecturally ambitious, and straightforward to fabricate and assemble with contemporary digital tools.

Our research group explores the future of construction through mass timber systems, digital fabrication, and computational and experimental structural engineering. We combine material innovation with advanced manufacturing, structural optimization, design-for-assembly, and full-scale sxperimental approaches to enable the next generation of prefabricated and modular timber buildings.

Our primary fields of specialization revolve around structural design and the application of computer numerical control manufacturing and design automation. We concentrate on matters like developing resilient, yet eco-friendly structures and advocating for digital design approaches for mass timber constructions.
